Mushrooms

Maitake Frondosa

Functional Mushrooms

Functional mushrooms comprise an exciting sphere of emerging research. Used in traditional practices for centuries, these mushroom varieties are now commercially available in modern formats such as powders and extracts and are studied for their roles supporting cognitive function, immune support, energy, and stress response.

Our Varieties

We cultivate an extensive list of functional mushrooms. Explore our offerings, from perennial favorites such as Cordyceps, Lion’s Mane, Turkey Tail, Reishi, Maitake and Shiitake to lesser-known, cult favorites such as Cordy-Gen (Bionectria ochroleuca) and Poria Cocos.

Functional Mushrooms

Building on a long history of the traditional use of medicinal mushrooms, there is a growing body of scientifically rigorous evidence supporting the efficacy of mushrooms in supporting health and wellness.

Ancient Tradition

Functional mushrooms have been used for thousands of years across Asia and Eastern Europe, perhaps most notably in traditional Chinese medicine. These traditions typically use whole mushrooms in teas, broths, or powders, often as part of broader herbal formulations.

Traditional use is based on long-term, holistic support rather than quick or targeted effects. Mushrooms are often categorized as tonics — substances considered to help maintain balance and support overall well-being over time.

Modern Science

Modern research on functional mushrooms focuses on their bioactive compounds, such as beta-glucans, triterpenes, and other polysaccharides. These compounds are studied for their interactions with the immune system, nervous system, and cellular processes like oxidative stress and inflammation.

Findings in this emerging field are promising, though early, which is why functional mushrooms are generally discussed in terms of “supporting” or “maintaining” health rather than treating specific conditions.

Top Sellers

Cordyceps

Cordyceps militaris

Cordyceps are valued for supporting energy, stamina, and oxygen utilization. Traditionally used in Chinese medicine, they may help reduce fatigue and support athletic performance. Some research suggests benefits for respiratory and immune function, making them popular for overall vitality and endurance.

Maitake

Grifola frondosa

Maitake mushrooms are prized for immune system support and metabolic health. Rich in beta-glucans, they may help regulate blood sugar and cholesterol levels. They’re also associated with supporting healthy weight management and enhancing the body’s natural defense mechanisms.

SHIITAKE

Lentinula edodes

Shiitake mushrooms are both nutritious and medicinal, supporting heart health and immune function. They contain compounds like lentinan and eritadenine, which may help lower cholesterol and promote immune resilience. Rich in vitamins and minerals, they’re widely used for overall wellness.

Lion’s Mane

Hericium erinaceus

Lion’s Mane is known for its potential to support brain health, memory, and focus. It contains compounds that may stimulate nerve growth factor (NGF), supporting neural repair. Often used for cognitive clarity and mood balance, it’s also studied for its role in long-term brain aging support.

REISHI

Ganoderma lingzhi

Reishi is often called the “mushroom of immortality” for its adaptogenic properties. It may help the body manage stress, support sleep quality, and balance the immune system. Reishi is also studied for cardiovascular support and its calming effects on the nervous system.

Turkey Tail

Trametes versicolor

Turkey Tail is well known for its immune-supporting polysaccharides, especially PSK and PSP. It’s commonly used alongside conventional treatments to support immune resilience. It may also promote gut health by supporting beneficial microbiota, contributing to overall immune balance.

Our Favorites

CORDY-GEN

Bionectria ochroleuca

Since 1977, we have been the sole producer of Cordy-Gen, a fungal isolate obtained in Nepal by co-founder Malcolm Clark and our mentor Dr. Yoshii, an early trailblazer in the cultivation of fresh and medicinal mushrooms in Japan and North America. Cordy-Gen is part of the fungal community associated with Cordyceps sinensis and is used to support vitality and recovery.

FU Ling

Wolfiporia cocos

Fu Ling is widely used in traditional Chinese medicine for supporting digestion, fluid balance, and calmness. It may help reduce water retention, support gut health, and promote relaxation. Often used in herbal formulas, it’s valued for gently strengthening overall physiological balance.
